Contemporary white kitchen renovation

A contemporary kitchen in white, with a central island and smooth, handleless fronts. Cabinetry, worktop, appliances and the plumbing and electrics behind them were handled as one job, by one team, for one price agreed in writing.

The brief

Space, light and order at the heart of the home

White, handleless, one island doing the work. Said out loud that sounds like a decorating choice. On site it is a set of decisions about where the services run and how much floor you give up to keep a clear worktop.

A kitchen is a room you stand in for two hours a day, so the practical questions come first. Where the bin lives. Whether two people can pass behind each other while one of them is at the hob. The answer here was to bring cooking and storage together in the middle of the room and leave the perimeter clear — and the tone of the white, the depth of the island and the way the fronts open all follow from that.

On site

What we did

Five trades, one queue. Cabinetry, worktop, appliances, plumbing and electrics are not five jobs that can happen in any order — they are one job with a correct sequence. All of it was coordinated by us and built by our own in-house team, the way we have worked in Valencia for more than 35 years.

First fix: water, waste and circuits taken to where the new layout needed them, including the feeds out to the island. Then the units, levelled properly. Then the worktop, templated on the built kitchen rather than on the plan — a few millimetres of drift is the difference between a joint you never notice and one you look at for years. Appliances and second fix last.

Get that order wrong and a kitchen takes twice as long and collects a list of extras nobody priced. Ours was itemised in writing before the first day on site and it did not move: the figure signed is the figure paid. The room went back to its owners finished, connected and working, on a turnkey handover.

Managed in English. If you live here and your Spanish runs out at the builders’ merchant, this is the part that matters: the quote, the choices and the “what happens next” come from one person, in English. See English-speaking builders in Valencia.

Materials and finishes

What is actually behind the white

Three decisions do most of the work in a kitchen like this one. None is exotic. All are unforgiving if the fitting is careless.

Smooth handleless white kitchen fronts fitted by Batecs in Valencia

Handleless fronts

A flat run of white, with no ironmongery to catch a sleeve or collect grease at the join. The trade-off is tolerance: with no handle to draw the eye, a door hung two millimetres out is the first thing you see.

The central island

Cooking and storage in the middle of the room, so the perimeter stays clear. It is also the piece that sets the services: power — and drainage, where the layout asks for it — must reach the centre of the floor before a unit goes in.

Seamless worktop and continuous surfaces in a white kitchen renovated by Batecs

Seamless surfaces

Fewer joints, fewer places for water and crumbs to settle, and a worktop that wipes down in one pass. Continuous surfaces are easier to live with than to install: they want the units dead level and the measurements taken from the built kitchen.

White earns its keep twice over: it throws light back into a room that usually has one window, and it strips out the visual noise. The price of that is discipline — there is nowhere for a bad joint to hide. It is less a style than a set of restraints, which is why it sits as well in a city flat as in a villa out in the Camp de Túria.
