Concrete pool with landscaped surroundings

A gunite pool that belongs to its garden. Shell, coping, paved surround and planting were drawn together, priced together and handed over as one finished piece of work.

The brief

The outdoor space as part of the project

A concrete pool integrated into its surroundings, with a perimeter coping and a landscaped garden made for spending time outside.

A pool is the easy thing to picture and the easy thing to get wrong. What decides whether a garden works, once the water is in it, is everything around the water: where the paving goes, where the shade falls, how you cross from the house without burning your feet.

So it was priced and built as a single job: water, paving and planting on one drawing, one programme and one written price, with one site manager answering for all of it. A pool on its own is our swimming pool construction work; with the house included it becomes a villa renovation.

What we did

Built in the order that keeps it watertight

Nothing here was improvised. This is the sequence that decides whether a pool still holds water in fifteen years — and almost all of it vanishes under the paving on the last day.

  • Earthworks and ground preparation. The excavation set out and the ground prepared to carry the shell, with levels fixed against the house and terrace before any concrete was ordered.
  • The gunite shell. Sprayed reinforced concrete, shaped to the plot rather than to a catalogue, so the depth, the steps and the entry sit where the garden wants them.
  • Waterproofing and drainage. Shell, fittings and joints sealed, and the ground all round the pool drained. The quiet phase that decides every other one.
  • Plant and services. Filtration, plumbing and electrics run in and tested before a single slab went down over them.
  • Coping, paving and planting. The edge capped, the surround laid up to it, the planting in last, so the garden closed around a finished pool instead of being patched together.

Every trade was ours or booked by us — our own in-house team, not names off a list — and one site manager stayed with the job from the first survey to handover. That continuity, after more than 35 years of it, is why the figure on the quote was the figure at the end.

Materials and finishes

The materials that decide how a pool ages

Two things age a pool badly: water that finds a way out, and a surround nobody thought about in August. Neither is a question of taste.

The coping caps the shell and works harder than it looks. It is the piece you grab climbing out — so it has to be secure underfoot — and the line where the pool stops and the garden starts.

The surround is a non-slip finish, chosen to stay safe when wet and bearable after an afternoon of sun. It carries on into the rest of the outdoor floor, so the terrace reads as one surface rather than a border round the water. The planting gives shade and privacy; the lighting was set out while the ducts were still open, the only cheap moment for it.

Underneath all of it sit the parts nobody photographs: the shell structure, the waterproofing, the drainage around it. Cut a corner on any of the three and it returns years later as a crack, a leak, or water you can never get clear. Done properly, a concrete pool lasts decades on upkeep you can predict.

Work like this is run in English throughout: an itemised quote you can read, the town hall file prepared and lodged by us, and one number to ring for an update. Our page for English-speaking builders in Valencia sets out how.
